Bed & Breakfast Offers Country Comfort in an Old Town

Friendly innkeepers create a homey, welcoming atmosphere for their guests.

The charming in Old Town. The innkeepers are Jean and Curtis Harrover, a married couple who moved into Bennett House in 1968.

In the spring of 1995, after their children had graduated from college, the Harrovers opened up their approximately 100-year-old home as a bed and breakfast. Bennett House is conveniently located near the Virginia Railway Express and is within walking distance of many Old Town shops and restaurants.

While Bennett House provides many traditional bed and breakfast services, including leaving mints and chocolates on pillows, Jean Harrover goes the extra mile to care for her guests. She wants them “to be comfortable and feel at home.”

“I hate for people not to feel at ease,” she said.

The Harrovers enjoy taking the time to get to know their guests. “My favorite part is the people,” Jean Harrover said. “It surely is.”

“We have guests from all over the world,” she added, “And you’d be surprised how many bed and breakfast owners we get.”

Breakfasts are a highlight of the Bennett House experience. “We offer a full-cooked country breakfast in the morning with a wide range of dishes that we cook here,” Jean Harrover said, “We use as many organic ingredients as we can find. We have fresh eggs from the country that come in once a week and our guests really seem to enjoy that.” Harrover’s favorite meal to serve to Bennett House guests is peaches and cream brulee french toast.

“Our guests enjoy sitting on the front porch when the weather gets warm enough and having a glass of wine,” Jean Harrover said. Bennett House provides adult guests with a complimentary glass of wine from The Winery at La Grange in nearby Haymarket, Virginia.

Bennett House has also served as a venue for several small weddings. “We would like to do more small, intimate weddings in the future,” Harrover said. “We’re looking forward to that.”
