City Employees Contribute $15.6K to United Way

City hosts informal breakfast to thank the nearly 60 employees who participated in the 2011 United Way Campaign.

The City of Manassas hosted an informal breakfast at the Public Works Facility recently to thank the 58 employees—nearly 13 percent of the city’s payroll—who participated in the 2011 United Way Campaign, Nov. 28 to Dec. 9, 2011.

City Housing Manager and workplace United Way Campaign Chair, Mickey Rhoades brought back the popular “Jeans and Jersey Day” that added $600 to the final donation amount of $15,600.  Each Friday during the campaign, staff donated $2.00 if they wore jeans and $2.00 if they wore their favorite jersey.

Workplace campaigns remain the most high-profile United Way fundraising activity, representing a significant portion of the funds gathered to invest in changing community conditions for the better.

“Many participants designate the Community Impact Fund to insure that their donations offer immediate support and impact to people in the area where they live and work,” explained Deneen Clary, Corporate Partnerships Associate for the United Way of the National Capital Area.

The recognition breakfast was capped by drawings for cakes, pies and donated prizes, such as a lunch with the Mayor, dinner at City Square Café  or tickets to the Hylton Performing Arts Center.

“We’re fortunate to have a local government that consists of caring employees,” said Rhoades.  “City Manager Larry Hughes cultivated that for 12 years, and leaves on a high note.”
