Bob Buttafuso, owner of Centreville Electronics in Old Town and local author, can now add TV personality to his list of achievements.
Buttafuso is starring in the new Spike TV series American Digger, which debuted Wednesday, March 21.
According to the Spike TV website, the show "follows artifact recovery company American Savage as it goes from backyard to backyard and from city to city in the U.S. looking for history's most valuable relics buried deep within the earth."
The premise of the show is the crew will have to convince homeowners that there are valuable relics buried in their backyard, dig up everything from gold coins to a megalodon teeth, and then split the profits with the homeowner.
Buttafuso joins former pro wrestler Ric "Heavy Metal" Savage, a friend of Buttafuso's, on the show. Buttafuso is is described as the shows "veteran" and "Battlefield Historian." And rightfully so, as he has identified the Civil War as a topic that fascinates him.
Buttafuso has been a relic hunter for 30 years and is surrounded by history in his local store, which has relics from the Civil War, including bullets and buckles, among other valuables relics available for purchase. Customers can also flip through a 91-page book, “Civil War Relic Hunting A to Z" that Buttafuso wrote as a guide to relic hunting.
But Buttafuso said he hasn't always been a history buff.
“I hated history in high school,” Buttafuso said. “I didn't like the way it was taught. Memorizing dates was boring.”
Now, his outlook is completely different.
“I wish it was taught like it is today. Video, the History Channel, it all makes it more fun to learn and makes it more interesting.”
