Updated: Man Stabs Hospital Patient

A man is in custody after he was able to gain access to a pair of scissors at Prince William Hospital and stab a patient in the side of the neck, police said.

According to Manassas City Police Sergeant Eddie Rivera, officers responded to Prince William Hospital just after 11 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 2  for an irate emergency room patient.

Moments before police arrived on the scene, the suspect, now identified as 32-year-old Marlin Bradford Summerville, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, gained access to a pair of scissors at the hospital and stabbed another patient in the side of their neck, police confirmed Wednesday.

MCPD did not know the condition of the victim and hospital officials said they could not confirm the information because of privacy laws, but did say the victim was not hospitalized.

Responding officers ordered Summerville to drop the scissors more than once before using a taser gun on the subject with negative results.

Police used several measures to subdue the patient, who admitted later to using the drug PCP. Rivera said after the taser gun did not work, officers utilized a K9 unit, pepper spray, ballistic shields and finally a baton to knock the scissors out of the suspect's hand.

Summerville received two lacerations on his arm and hand from the K9 unit, Rivera said. He is being held without bond and is facing multiple charges, including malicious wounding, assault on law enforcement, attempted escape by force, abduction, assault and battery of a health care provider, disorderly conduct on hospital grounds, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.

No injuries to officers or hospital staff were reported.

According to police, this was not the first time Summerville was arrested in Manassas. He was also charged with destruction of property, unlawful entry and public intoxication after a Dec. 31 incident, where a victim reported a man broke down her door before fleeing the scene.
