Manassas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
The Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad hosted the first 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Sunday.
The Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad hosted the first 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Sunday at the Weichert Realty Building on Sudley Road to remember and honor the firefighters who lost their life while responding to the terrorist attacks in New York.
The event began at 8:46 a.m.—the exact time 10 years ago when the first hijacked plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Most of the firefighters will be climbing the 110 flights (the equivalent number of flights in each of the twin towers) in full gear, which weighs between 60 and 70 pounds, as well as carrying commemorative items such as badges and pictures of the firefighters that were killed on that day.
Each firefighter that participated in the Manassas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb made a donation, in addition to corporate sponsors. Proceeds from the climb will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (www.firehero.org), which provides assistance to the surviving families of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
