Manassas Weather: Excessive Heat Watch Issued for Friday
Weather this weekend in Manassas is expected to be very hot.
Update, June 29:
Manassas and Northern Virginia are under a "code red" air quality alert. AirNow.gov shows the area is under an air quality index of 161, solidly in the "unhealthy" range.
"Active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors," said AirNow.gov. "Everyone else, especially children, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors."
Late June will feel like late August this weekend in Manassas as temperatures reach the upper 90s Thursday through Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Friday morning through Friday evening. NWS' forecast calls for heat index values to up to 110 degrees.
What's a heat index? It factors in humidity and other factors that make it feel hotter than it is. It could feel 110 degress in Manassas, even if the actual temperature is in the mid-90s.
The high temperature will be 93 with sun on Thursday. Temperatures will climb to 98 Friday, 99 Saturday and 101 Sunday. Temperatures will drop back to 96 Monday and 92 Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service extended forecast.
Friday’s skies will be partly cloudy, and there is a slight chance of thunderstorms Friday afternoon, evening and overnight. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and mostly clear.
The humidity will hover around 50 percent during the day, rising slightly overnight from Thursday through Monday.
"Most local shops should be open, and I would ask people to take advantage of the town's businesses as well," said Robert Halsall, deputy emergency management coordinator for the City of Manassas.
