Unemployed - where'd she get the money to buy all those guns? Guns aren't cheap! In this case I'd suggest they follow the money trail.

Well now she won't have to worry about her next meal. It will be delivered in front of her nose, on a sheet metal tray, 3 times a day. Thanks Ms. Dinkins for adding this unneeded negative attention to the current weapon policies.

Well now she does not have to worry about finding a job! She is now a criminal. They really screwed this investigation up; they should have operated this as a sting and arrested everyone who was going to buy these firearms, they could have gotten 30 or more other criminals off our streets.

Until last year, an individual could only buy only 1 gun/month in Virginia, a law enacted years ago because VA had become a major source of "gun straw purchases". Persons from states like NJ would come to VA and buy many guns and return to their home state, where they were resold and used in the commission of crimes. Unfortunately, the state changed the law last year so that individuals could buy multiple guns/mo. Opponents of the change argued that VA would again become a "gun running state". Had the law NOT been changed, this individual would not have been able to buy multiple guns legally and would not be liable for jail time. This case illustrates that the change in law about the number of guns purchased per month was unwise. Unfortunately, expect to witness many more such cases.

As we don’t really know anything about this women like her prior criminal history, it would be making generalities to say she would not have committed any crime given her circumstances, but changing the law to make something better for the lawful citizen, does not constitute blame for the criminal actions of others. I would speculate that she has done this or other crimes before, and I would also speculate she had customers lined up to purchase these weapons. Thirty weapons at retail is a substantial investment to make without customers or co-conspirators involved in the planning and execution of this crime. Five years is a very light sentence even with an admission of guilt, I would expect that there will be other arrests stemming from this case, if any of the customers fronted or placed a down payment for the straw purchase of these weapons they too can and should be charged with conspiracy to unlawfully purchase and acquire firearms.
