Sprouts and Shutters: What Should Take the Place of the Giant on Centreville Road?
Giant Food Stores officials announced in September that the store at 8819 Centreville Road in Manassas would shutter on Nov. 1.
The Giant Food Store at 8819 Centreville Road near the intersection of Liberia Avenue in Manassas is slated to close in less than a month, Giant officials announced last week.
So we ask, what should open in the vacant space? Another grocer, a skating rink, a restaurant?
Please tells us in the commenting section.

How about a car wash? Just kidding - how about a craft store (like A.C. Moore), or a Trader Joes... Personally I'd like to see a shoe store open around here!

Oh my God. If a Trader Joe's open right there I would die of joy.

Unfortunately the only store that will go in will be a multi culture grocery store just like the ones where other supermarket in the past had closed.

My wife would definitely want a craft store.
Michaels, A.C. Moore and JoAnns are all 10-15 minutes away.
I would prefer a new educational institution (Nova Community College or New Middle/High School to replace Parkside and OP buildings

How about fighting to keep the Giant there? That shopping center is on 2 major roads and easily accessible from both. Giant should expand into the two empty storefronts next to it.

This is the only comment I agree with. I have shopped there for more than 20 years; I don't want it to close and I love the employees there; they have become "friends" who will be missed greatly!

L.M. Miller, I made the Giant public relations team aware of all the feedback we'd receive from the public in response to the Giant closing. Maybe the ire will make them reconsider?

I agree, L.M. Miller. I always hoped they would expand like they did at Westgate....

A Whole Foods would be cool. The nearest one I can think of is Vienna.

Jamie, so glad you did that. Just like Lucille, we have been shopping there for 20 years and don't want to see it close either. We too have gotten to know many of the employees and going to Giant is the closest thing we have to a "small town environment" (where everyone seems to know each other) in this area.
Years ago there was a Hallmark shop in the very end of the plaza that closed when their lease was up. Reason? Giant owned the building and wasn't going to renew the leases for the Hallmark store and whatever else was in there at that time because they were supposed to expand the grocery store allowing for of a selection, larger produce, etc. and that never happened. A few years ago there was also talk of that, but again, never happened. I'm thinking about contacting Giant Headquarters myself.
Speaking of Hallmark, it sure would be nice to have one in the Manassas Park Town Center.

Correction: "allowing for MORE of a selection, A larger produce SECTION, etc." Hope my comment will make sense now.

I love the Giant store and wish it would not leave. If they decide to go through with it though, I would LOVE to see a Wegmans. The only other 2 near by is Gainesville and Fairfax.
Now if not a grocery store I actually would love to see a Skating rink. The only skating rink around here now is on the other side of town and the parking there is horrific.

All those ideas are great except that the true demographics around that shopping center does not support any of those ideas. Put that shopping center in a middle of a map and draw a 1-mile radius around it. Then look at the demographics of that 1-mile radius along with their purchasing power. Tell me what do you have?

I can't believe they are closing that store after spending all that money to open the gas station there!

Trader Joe's definitely. Manassas residents have to travel 30-ish minutes away for one of those. It's about time we had one ourselves.

WHOLE FOODS. Trader Joe's really isn't that great. But having a Whole Foods with a large organic section and one that works with the farmer's here in Virginia would be amazing. Could you imagine having something healthy, like a juice bar, or the incredible soups from Whole Foods in Manassas?! Or vegetarian options? I've bought stuff from Trader's that was straight up rancid. Although doesn't Whole Foods keep their number of stores low on purpose? If Whole Foods ever moved in it would be a massive increase in value to Manassas.

A Wegmans would be nice, but the space is too small. A Whole Foods would work maybe. The closest one is in Fairfax. It would be nice to have one so close. Trader Joe's would be good, though it is a larger space than most other locations. If the stores to right of the Giant closed there may be room to tear down and rebuild like Safeway has done with some of their locations.

I've heard from a reliable source that they are planning to tear it all down and build a Costco.
