Sr. Trooper R.D. Best was flown to a local hospital after a car crossed in front of his motorcycle Friday.

A Virginia State Trooper was seriously injured during a car crash in the Manassas area Friday morning after an elderly man failed to yield the right of way, a Virginia State Police spokesman said.

Sr. Trooper R.D. Best was traveling north on Route 234 at 9:4o a.m., when a car crossed in front of his police-issued 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle, police spokesperson Corrine Geller said.

"A Nissan Altima on Pinnacle Ridge Road suddenly pulled across the northbound lanes of Route 234 and directly into the path of Sr. Trooper Best. The trooper was unable to avoid the Nissan and collided with its front end," Geller said in a press release.

Best was thrown from the motorcycle by the force of the impact and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Best was traveling the speed limit while on regular patrol along Route 234, police said.

The Altima's driver, William B. Hash, 86, of Melbourne, Fla., was not injured in the crash. Hash was charged with failure to yield the right of way.
