Sudley Road Giant Renovated After Liberia Avenue Location Closes
The Landover, MD-based upgraded and reopened one of its Manassas stores right after closing its Liberia Avenue location.
Less than a month after announcing it would shutter its grocery store on Liberia Avenue and Centreville Road in Manassas, Giant Food Stores announced it had renovated and re-opened its Sudley Road location, less than four miles away.
The store, located at 8025 Sudley Rd. in the Westgate Shopping Plaza, held a grand re-opening in November to show off its new features and products.
As part of its renovation, the store moved its floral department to the front of the store, revamped its service desk and added a salad bar, said Jamie Miller, a spokesman for the Landover, MD-based grocer.
The store also increased its international and ethnic food offerings, including a aisle way dedicated to Hispanic foods and products, he said.
There are 30 percent more dairy products and a new gourmet cheese and olive kiosk in the Giant deli.
The store also upgraded its technology; the "Scan It!" hand held device allows customers to select, scan, bag and pay for their choices without ever standing in a checkout line. The hand held device works with two, self checkout areas in the store.
The company also boasts a deli kiosk, that allows customers to automatically place deli orders, shop, then pick up the items at the end of the trip, according to a Giant press release.
The November revamping was in sync with the cross town closing of another Giant.
The Liberia Avenue Giant, the anchor of the Manassas Junction Shopping Center, closed after 31 years of business.
Giant President Anthony Hucker, wrote in a release that he and other staff decided to close the store after reviewing the store's operation and performance.
Its closing was preceded by the January closing of the city's last Blockbuster Video location.
A Domino's Pizza, a Starbucks and a nail salon remain in the shopping center.
