Manassas Volunteers Prepare for Busy Election

What goes into holding an election?

On Tuesday, , and city officials are busy behind the scenes making sure the polling goes off without a hitch.

“I have been in Manassas for 22 years,” said resident and poll worker Cheryl Macias. “I love this city and I’m pleased to be able to give back by working at my local precinct.”

Macias and 50 other workers will arrive at the precincts at 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning, May 1, to start the day. They will set up the voting machines, open the poll books, put up signs and make sure everything is ready to go. The workers will stay until at least 8 p.m., consolidating the votes and filling out paperwork for the government. Macias said she was nervous during her first election, but this time she knows what to expect and is thrilled to spend the day working the polls.

“I am excited our last election was the Republican Primary and we only had about 100 voters at my precinct,” said Macias. “Tuesday should be a lot busier.”

Registered voters can go to any of the five precincts in Manassas and vote with a picture ID.

“It is wonderful to get out and meet my neighbors and I am encouraged when I see young people out voting,” said Macias. “I look forward to helping out in my community for years to come!”

Council Member Marc Aveni noted at a recent council meeting during a presentation of the Voter Registrar's Annual Report for 2011 by Electoral Board Chair Jack B. Slimp, Jr., Chair that "voting in the city of Manassas is easy to do and it is always done right and there's never any trouble or hint of a problem and we appreciate that very much as an elected official."

Council Member Steven J. Randolph, who's been in several elections, said the board has always been first rate and the Registrar's Office has always been helpful and supportive of people running for office by helping them navigate the laws. "I think they do a terrific job for the entire city with the small staff that you have it is pretty amazing," he said.

Council Member Sheryl Bass, who has served as an election official in the past, also noted the importance of the volunteers. "It requires a lot of volunteers, who work a long day," she said.
