Kaine Talks Rail, Economy and Bipartisanship

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Public Policy Polling released the results of a new survey Tuesday; Romney is campaigning in Chantilly Wednesday.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney trails President Barack Obama by eight points in a poll of Virginia voters by Public Policy Polling. PPP released the poll results Tuesday; Romney is visiting a company in Chantilly Wednesday on a campaign stop. Obama leads Romney 51 – 43 percent, up slightly from PPP’s poll in December when Obama led by six points (48 – 42). In the late April poll, 6 percent of respondents said they were undecided. PPP surveyed 680 Virginia voters through an automated telephone interview system from April 26 to April 29. Republican Nominees, School Board Challengers Successful at Election

Republican nominees carry success into election day; while school board challengers Ilka V. Chavez and Ellen M. Purdy join the city's school board.

The Republican Convention nominees appear to have secured a spot on city council, according to unofficial election results for the May 2012 Manassas City elections posted on the Virginia State Board of Elections website. Incumbent Mark D. Wolfe received 1,363 or 20.6 percent of the votes; incumbent Jonathan L. Way received 1,327 votes or 20.06 percent of the votes; and challenger Ian T. Lovejoy nabbed 1,243 votes or 18.8 percent of the votes. Write-in candidate Sheryl Bass did not receive enough votes to stay on council where she currently serves. She received 15.9 percent of the vote. All six precincts, including absentee votes, have been tallied and reported at 100 percent for both the school board and city council. School board …

Romney to Visit Chantilly

Presidential hopeful scheduled to visit Exhibit Edge in Chantilly Wednesday morning.

Voter Turnout Slow but Steady

As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, more than 1,200 voters had shown up at the city's five precincts. Most people said they were surprised by the low voter turnout especially in a tightly contested election.

With more than 1,200 people voting so far with less than five hours left to cast a vote, write-in city council candidate Sheryl Bass could have an early lead based on the amount of pink t-shirts that showed up to area polling locations Tuesday. Although the Virginia State Board of Elections Elections Results Web page has not reported the unofficial results, Leslie Kostelecky, who was supporting Bass outside Haydon Elementary School Tuesday, said she has seen a significant amount of support for the write-in candidate who was not nominated by her party during the Republican Convention in late January.  Kostelecky said voters have been asking for literature pertaining to campaign, which sprouted as part of a grass roots effort among citizens …
