2012 St. Baldrick's Foundation Manassas
The second annual St. Baldrick's Foundation hair shaving fund raiser will take place this weekend in Old Town Manassas.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation supports research into finding cures for childhood cancer by funding grants for research. Participants sign up, raise money and then have their heads shaven to stand in support of the scores of children that are diagnosed each year with the various forms of cancers.
This year's event is dedicated to the memory of Darren M. Trudgen Smith (the son of a friend of one of the event organizers). Darren lost his battle with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma on June 23, 2011 at 1:10 pm.
The event will start at 1:00 pm with a short memorial service to remember Darren with the releasing of balloons at 1:10. Darren's mother will be in attendance to be the first person to have their head shaved.
Last year's event raised over $11,000. Manassas City Councilman Marc Aveni had his head shaved, along with the young boy who introduced the fundraising idea and many others. See photos from last year's event.
"He came home from school and said that he wanted to get his head shaved to save kids with cancer," said Michelle Patrick, the boys mom and one of the event's organizers. "He said he had already asked his teacher how much she would pay him to go bald and she told him $50."
Donations are still being taken. You can donate online at http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/6622/2012. All donations are tax deductible. This year's event will have a dunk tank and several bounce houses to entertain the children. Donations will be accepted at the event with several door and raffle prizes available.
