Local Lions Attend International Convention in Toronto

Close to 25,000 Lions Club members from more than 120 countries descended upon Toronto for the 2014 Lions Club International Convention.  Attending the convention from the Lake Jackson/Mid-County Lions Club were Judy and Russ Holt.  Convention attendees took part in various breakout sessions, voted for their choice of 2nd Vice International President and International Directors and networked with other Lions from around the world.  While many of the events took place indoors, the highlight of the convention was the 1.6 kilometer Parade of Nations.  Spectators lined the street clicking pictures of the dazzling parade.  Tourists from different countries visiting Toronto, could be seen searching for their own country’s delegates, talking to them and taking their pictures.

Lions Club International (LCI) is an organization founded by Melvin Jones in 1917.  It has evolved over the decades into an organization filled with individuals who are committed to giving back to their communities.  All across the world, Lions Club members are actively involved in fundraising and getting involved in projects that will benefit the communities in which they live.

Today millions of people worldwide have been touched by the Lions focus on work for the blind and visually impaired.  The Lions took that path after Helen Keller addressed their international convention in Cedar Point, Ohio in 1925 and asked them to be “THE KNIGHTS OF THE BLIND IN THE CRUSADE AGAINST DARKNESS.”  Although sight and hearing programs are their primary focus, Lions Club members also support youth activities, hunger initiatives and environmental projects around the world.
