Birdhouse-making Santa Claus

It may not be the North Pole and there may not be any elves, but this local Santa has been hard at work making wooden birdhouses for the perfect holiday gift.

Driven down Liberia Avenue lately? If so, you may have seen Manassas resident Glenn Palmer dressed as Santa perched alongside his hand-made birdhouses.

Palmer,  who has lived in Manassas for almost 60 years, has been making the the little wooden houses for 11 years. He's sold nearly 100 of his bird houses this year, but said he sold nearly double that about three years ago when the economy was better.

Palmer said his birdhouses are available year round and range from $13 to $75, which will get you the ultimate birdhouse with 12 rooms!

Palmer says passersby stop to get a photo with 'Santa' and he passes out candy canes. Many motorist honk as they drive by his home on Lomond South Drive just before it turns to Liberia Avenue.

Those who stop by are not required to buy a birdhouse. And even though folks have offered to pay for the photo op with Santa, Palmer said he works a full-time job in addition to his birdhouse business, and does not want  the money.
