Main Street Manassas Reveals Million-Dollar Makeover this Week

Main Street in Manassas gets a whole new look.

Main Street Manassas officially revealed the results of its makeover on Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Months of pounding, digging and grinding have produced a million dollar new look for the main thoroughfare of Old Town Manassas, which has been closed periodically to thru traffic since late July.

The project, known as Main Street Streetscapes, widened narrow sidewalks from 4 feet, to up to 16 feet to allow small businesses to offer outside dining and walkers more space to stroll the streets.
“I can see Main Street merchants, restaurants and businesses benefitting from the more welcoming ambiance outside their doors,”  Manassas Mayor Harry J. Parrish II said. “I’m sure the wider sidewalks, outdoor dining, and trees will encourage more visitors to spend time on Main Street, as they do on Battle Street and in other areas of Old Town.”

The project also added 19 Allee Lacebark Elm and Green Vase Japanese Zelkova trees along with brick crosswalks at the cross streets, much like those found at the intersection of Battle and Center Streets.  About $100,000 of the total project budget went toward street design. Another $975,000 was spent on construction, officials said.

Local government staff said the Main Street Streetscapes project is a part of the city’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and an continuing investment in the Old Town area in an effort to attract visitors and enhance their experience in the City of Manassas.
