Official Report: Clogged Drain, Heavy Rains Reason for Manassas Roof Collapse

A clogged drain pipe, the lack of a scupper drain, along with buckets of rainfall all led to the collapse of the roof on a Manassas car dealership Friday afternoon, according to the findings of an official investigation by the Manassas Volunteer Police Department.

Fire investigators said rain collected on the roof of the Manassas Hyundai showroom during back-to-back rain events, causing it to fall.

The rain leaders draining a trench drain on the edge of the roof also failed and no scupper drains were provided, firefighters said.

Electrical components of the building as well as its heating and air conditioning units were effected by the collapse, officials said.

An employee who twisted her ankle while trying to run outside during the collapse is the only reported injury.

It is not clear if the dealership will reopen for business.
