Patch Picks: Staycations

Five places to enjoy the spring season, locally.

Why do you need to travel to a faraway place for spring break when there are plenty of things to do in and around town (or in your own backyard)? Check out this week’s Patch picks for some fun things to do this season.

  • – take the family to the lovely Cherry Blossom Festival running from March 26 – April 10. Want to make it an overnight event? Go to the parade on the Saturday, April 9 at 10 a.m., spend the night downtown and hit the festival Sunday morning.

  • Manassas National Battlefield Park – there are plenty of things to do at this beautiful park. Visit the museum and explore civil war paraphernalia, watch the kids play with the electronic battle map to learn field strategies, or take pictures along the self-guided Henry Hill Loop Trail.

  • Take a swim in the pool – no, not an outside pool, the Freedom Center pool! Since they’re not open yet for the summer why not enjoy the water inside? Open swim and recreational swim (sides, channels, and tumble buckets) runs during regular operating hours. Also, on the first Friday of every month, kids ages 4-11 are invited to a night of fun with games, activities, swimming and pizza.

  • Camp in your own backyard – if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on a spring getaway, grab that tent from the back closet (or buy one at Wal-mart for a few bucks) and camp out! It’s still cool enough out to get cozy under a blanket while you roast mallows and play board games over a small fire.

  • Laugh it up at The Comedy Spot – spend a couple weekends this spring giving your gut a workout with huge laughter at The Comedy Spot in Ballston Common Mall in Arlington. Watch improvisation routines or go to Open Mic night on Thursdays. You'll find various shows for all ages.
