Possible Tornado Brings Tree Down on Manassas House

The National Weather Service is investigating a violent thunderstorm Wednesday night that knocked a tree into a house and left thousands in Fairafax and Prince William Counties without power.

The tree fell around 11:30 p.m. and struck a home by Old Dominion Drive and Sheridan Lane near Prince William Fairgrounds. The Manassas Volunteer Fire Department said the home's residents escaped unharmed.

The storm may have been caused by straight-line winds, which the National Weather Service defines as the downdraft of a fast-moving thunderstorm. Wednesday's storm was capable of producing winds in excess of 60 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service says the area could experience more severe storms Thursday.
