Russian National Ballet Theatre: Romeo and Juliet & Chopiniana

In the grand tradition of Russian ballet, this delightful ensemble performs two of the most romantic classical ballets in one spectacular evening. With brilliant music by Chopin and gorgeous choreography by Mikhail Fokine, Chopiniana, or Les Sylphides as it is often known, has been described as a “romantic reverie” and depicts ballerinas bathed in moonlight dancing around a young poet. In the same evening, this gifted company of dancers presents Romeo and Juliet. Petipa’s dazzling choreography and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score illuminate Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale of young star-crossed lovers falling victim to family hatred. Founded in Moscow in the late 1980s, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is committed to both preserving the timeless tradition of classical Russian ballet, and rejuvenating it by embracing dance developments from across the globe. “A cut above many of its rivals.” (The Washington Post)
