Free Lecture: Tracking Time During the Civil War

On April 28 historian and author Art Candenquist will speak on the tracking of time during the Civil War.

In this day and age, the ease of telling time is often taken for granted. After all, a quick glance at the cell phone or computer screen is all it takes to answer the question ‘what time is it?’

In the 1860’s, when cell phones and computer screens didn’t exist, telling time was much different than it is today.  Standardized time was not instituted in the United States until 1883, 20 years after the Civil War.  How did Americans keep track of time before standard time existed?

On Thursday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. historian and author Art Candenquist will explain how Americans kept time during the Civil War.  This free lecture will be held at the Old Manassas Courthouse.
