Manassas Kmart to Close for Good in September

Kmart is the second major store on Sudley Road in Manassas to shutter this year.

Manassas' only Kmart store is set to close its doors for good in mid-September, said Howard Riefs, spokesman for Sears Holdings, Kmart's parent company.

Decision makers for the big-box retailer have decided not to renew the store's lease in the shopping plaza located near Interstate 66 in the Manassas area of Prince William County.

Seventy-one employees will be affected by the store's closing but they are welcome to apply for positions at other Kmart and Sears stores in the area, Riefs said.

The nearest Kmart store is in Chantilly on Metrotech Drive, according to the Kmart website.

The Sears store in the Manassas Mall down the road from the Manassas Kmart is not going out of business, he added.

"As a part of the ordinary course of business we close stores for a variety of reasons ... the store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model," Riefs said.

The actions allow the company to focus on investments and serving customers and members through integrated retail, he added.

The store will begin its liquidation sale on June 30.

That retail giant maintains a presence in Manassas through its location in Sowder Village Square on Nokesville Road.
