Safeway Food Stores Launch Gas Rewards Program

The program, which launched this month, will give shoppers points from store purchases to use on gas purchases.

Safeway has partnered with ExxonMobil to start rewarding shoppers in Northern Virginia for their purchases at Safeway stores by cutting costs at the pump.

This month, Safeway will launch their Reward Points loyalty program which will give shoppers points toward savings on gas at ExxonMobil stations.

“Safeway listens to its shoppers, and we understand the importance of stretching grocery dollars,” said Mir Aamir, president of Customer Loyalty and Digital Technologies at Safeway in a press release from the company. “By teaming up with ExxonMobil, we’re able to thank our customers with a loyalty program that makes two frequent and critical purchases lead to real savings.”

There is only one Safeway in Annandale, located at 7414 Little River Turnpike in the Little River Shopping Center. Another nearby Safeway is located 5204 Port Royal Road in Springfield, not far from Wakefield Park.

Shoppers will be able to earn rewards points on certain purchases. The release states that points can be earned by buying groceries, gift cards or pharmacy items and using the Safeway Club Card. For every 100 points earned, shoppers can take 10 cents off per gallon at the pump (redeemable for up to $1 per gallon in rewards).

The points program is similar to one run by rival grocery store Giant, which offers the same deal to its customers: for every 100 points earned, shoppers get 10 cents off at Shell gas stations.

If we had a Safeway in Manassas Park this may be a good thing, but they are overpriced and not worth going out of my way.

The Safeways in Washington State have their own branded gas and pumps at about 3/4 of the stores, nice low prices and the rewards program. I was hoping they would also do the same in Northern Virginia.
