Salt Says:

From the outside, Burger Boys looks like it could be a sleek, modern, if not slightly pretentious, eatery. I'm glad to say my original perception turned out to be completely different from what the eatery really is.

I was a little disappointed by the limited menu. True to its name, the restaurant serves a plethora of burgers and also a number of sandwiches, but there's not much else choose from if you're not in the mood for either.

Unfortunately, I wasn't in the mood.  I opted for one of the “limited time” specials: shrimp and chips, or as the menu also called it, “shrimp and freedom fries.”

The reference to the slightly-dated term, “freedom fries”  made me smile as I looked around the room. It reminded me of a food court in the middle of the 1980s.

The walls were yellow, but not too bright. The half-dropped ceiling was covered with standard office ceiling tiles which, for some reason,  also covered a couple  of feet of the wall space.

An arcade area in the back added to the 1980s feeling. Unlike the décor at last week's spot, Burger Boys made me feel at home, like I was eating in my best friend's kitchen.

My food arrived and the butterfly shrimp were crunchy and well seasoned. Even though they were a little overcooked, I loved it. The fries were standard and nothing to brag about.

The service was decent, the restaurant was clean, the food was average. I would probably come back one day when I'm up for trying a burger.

Pepper Says:

When I opened the door to Burger Boys, I immediately stepped back to check and make sure I was in the right place.

The place has been open for nine years, but I only recently heard of it and this was my first visit.

The counters and the décor are reminiscent of an old school ice cream shop. Add a couple of red stools and a counter, and it would look like a place frequented by Archie and his friends. The actual eating area looked like a mall food court. There were also several old arcade games and a crane game in the back.

The woman behind the counter, who was possibly the owner or, one of the owners, immediately came over to take my order.

I asked for a few minutes to look over the menu and discovered it had some great options for burgers and other entrees.

Like Five Guys, there’s a double patty, but no option for how it’s prepared.

I decided on the half burger combo with Swiss cheese, bacon, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato and A-1 sauce served on a Kaiser bun.

While waiting for my food, I saw several orders prepared. The onion rings looked great and I slightly regretted my order when I saw a huge steak and cheese sub taken to someone’s table.

My burger was huge, and tasted great.

The lettuce didn’t seem super fresh and the tomato slices weren’t quite ripe, but the grilled onions were great and so were the pickles and cheese. It couldn’t of hurt to have a little more on these toppings.

The fries were plain, and not impressive, but the burger was so filling, I probably will not even order fries the next time.

All in all, I can understand why Burger Boys is an award winner. The service is very friendly, the burgers are great and if you can manage it, there’s a good selection of Hershey’s Ice Cream for dessert.

Salt- Why would you go to a place named Burger Boys when you aren't in the mood for burgers? You must spend a lot of time being disappointed.

I imagine they don't have a choice - they have to review the restaurants they are told to review, or even if they choose the restaurants themselves days ahead it's no gaurantee that they will be looking forward to eating what's on the menu.

As a food critic, one should perhaps review what readers want to know? I suspect folks are a lot more interested in how the burgers are at a place called Burger Boys.

You're right Kris-the girls choose their destination at least four days ahead of time.

Thanks! I had no idea this place even existed
