Tropical Storm Andrea Prompts Flash Flood Watch for VRE Service Area

The commuter rail service is prepared to enforce speed restrictions for the Friday commute to the Manassas area, should weather forecasters change the flood watch into a flood warning.

Commuters riding the rails may experience delays as they make their way home this afternoon due to rainy conditions caused by Tropical Storm Andrea.

A flash food watch is in effect for the entire Virginia Railway Express coverage area, which includes stops in Manassas and Manassas Park, according to VRE officials.

Right now there aren't any speed restrictions, but they will be enforced if the flash food watch turns into a flash flood warning, VRE officials added.

When speed restrictions are in effect, trains can travel no faster than 15 miles per hour on the VRE Manassas Lane.  Trains can go up to 40 miles per hour on the Fredericksburg Line.

Delay times depend on where the trains are on the line when the restriction is imposed as well as how far down the line commuters are traveling.

Delays could be as long 60 to 75 minutes.  Additionally, VRE officials may make the decision to cancel Manassas Line Train 335.
