Vision for Vacancies: Old Town Post Office Building

A portion of the building houses a post office, and will for at least another 90 years, but the other part of the Old Town location has been vacant for awhile. What would you like to see there?

The bid for the Old Town Post office building in Manassas was recently , meaning the building could sit vacant for even longer.

, but that price was not high enough for federal authorities who are trying to pay back

According to The Washington Post, the bid was upped to $400,000, but that didn't cut it either. The property is listed at just below $700,000, and the Post reported that federal authorities are willing to hold out for a good price.

That's too bad, because the property sits in a prime location , walking distance from the Harris Pavilion, Virginia Rail Express Manassas train station and numerous restaurants and specialty shops. There's also a bus stop located at the property, which is easily accessible by car, bike, train or foot.

The all-brick building is 9,976-square feet, but the new owner must honor a special 99-year, $725 per month lease agreement for the post office to occupy 20 percent of the space. The city, which has first rights to buy the property,  have said they could step in should they feel the post office is in jeopardy.

The remainder of the building consists of numerous separate offices, four bathrooms and beautiful marble and wood floors, on three separate levels.

The two Manassas men who placed the winning bid on the property told the Post that the interior of the building needs work and the asking price is too high. They said they are disappointed they lost out on a good deal and the opportunity to keep ownership local, but are even more disappointed the building will stay vacant even longer.

The duo had preliminary plans to convert the space to offices, but what would you like to see move into the prime Old Town location?
