Flooded Roadways Make for Difficult Commute Tuesday

Up to four inches of rain fell in the western portions of the county during the overnight and early morning hours Tuesday, making for a difficult morning commute for some.

Officials in Prince William County are urging caution after heavy rains in the area left some area roads flooded Tuesday morning,

According to WTOP, commuters had a difficult time navigating high standing water on Piper Lane in the Manassas-area of the county near the Broad Run VRE station. Piper Lane is located off of Rte. 28 near the railroad tracks and had to be shut down Tuesday morning because the nearby Broad Run overran its banks, leaving nearly a mile of the the roadway under water.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for urban areas and small streams in Prince William County and surrounding areas until 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.

"Due to heavy rainfall the area has been experiencing localized street flooding and in some incidents causing street closures," said the Department of Fire and Rescue in a release." Fire and rescue units have responded to numerous flood-related incidents in which motorists have become trapped in their vehicles after attempting to cross flooded roadways."

Prince William County officials are urging motorists not to attempt to cross flowing streams and never driver through flooded roadways because "six inches of water can stall a vehicle."
