Penis-Severing by Lorena Bobbitt Happened 20 Years Ago This Week

It's been 20 years since Bobbitt's arrest for malicious wounding.

Twenty years ago, Lorena Bobbitt took the term "a woman scorned" to another level when she chopped off her husband's penis and flung it out her car window as she drove away from the scene.

When asked about the case on Monday Prince William County Police spokesman Jonathan Perok said the department had commented on the case on numerous occasions over the last two decades. "We have no reason to discuss the case further," he said.

The case drew national and international media attention to Manassas in the mid-1990s.

A phone call to Bobbitt at her western Prince William County charity, Lorena's Red Wagon, wasn't immediately returned.

Prince William County Police said that Lorena Bobbitt removed her husband's penis after he returned to their Manassas apartment intoxicated.

She was charged with malicious wounding, but was later found not guilty by reason of insanity, the Huffington Post reports.

She now runs a non-profit called Lorena's Red Wagon in Haymarket which aims to help families prevent domestic violence.

Victim-turned-celebrity John Wayne Bobbit is speaking on the incident, telling Britain's The Sun newspaper that his sex life has actually improved.

"The doctors told me I would never be able to have sex again because my injuries were so bad. But I’ve proved them wrong time and time again," John Bobbitt said.

After stints in the pornography industry and working at a legal Nevada brothel, John Bobbitt works as a carpenter and a limo driver in Niagara Falls, NY.
