Photos: Flooding Closes Area Roads

Several roadways were temporarily closed today as heavy rains continued to pound Manassas.

Police in Manassas City were closing and reopening area roads Thursday afternoon as needed due to flash flooding.

High, standing water at two locations on Prince William Street east and west of Jefferson Street led police to temporarily shut down the road shortly after school let out.

Residents in the area said the roadway is prone to standing, high water, but said they had never seen it this bad.

"We just don't get rain like this," said one woman who lives along the road.

According to Manassas City Manager Lawrence J. Hughes, Grant Avenue under the railroad was also closed due to standing water. Elsewhere in the city, police were seen at the intersection of Nokesville Rd. (Rte. 28) and Godwin, where there was a lot of water in the roadway.

In Prince William County, high, rushing water from a local runoff tributary crossed over Amherst Drive in the Manassa area of the county, temporarily closing the road Thursday afternoon (see photos).

Officials reopened the road shortly before 5 p.m., which was left littered with debris from the receding water.

Elsewhere in the county, it was reported that the intersection of Godwin and Sudley roads was closed due to high water, as was the intersection of Cellar Door and Wellington.

Will Armstrong who lives off of Signal Hill Road near Moore Drive said flooding of the local roadway left some motorists stranded and eventually forced police to close it temporarily until the water receded.

According to the Prince William County Government's website, several roads were reported closed or have high water covering them due to the large amount of rain the area has received over the past several days.

Some of the roads closed as of 10:40 p.m. Thursday include:

  • Sudley Road/Lee Highway
  • Purcell Road/Dumfries Road
  • Wellington Road/Cellar Door
  • Nokesville Road/Piper Lane
  • Rolling Road/Sudley Road
  • Lake Jackson Drive
  • Purcell Road/Vista Brook
  • Signal Hill Road/Signal View Drive
  • Lucasville Road/Hersch Farm Lane
  • Brentsville Road/Bradley Forest
  • Aden Road/Fleetwod
  • Aden Road from Colvin to Route 28
  • Lucasville Road/Hidden Springs
  • Route 1/Dale Blvd
  • Route 1/Opitz
  • Telegraph (between Old Bridge & Caton Hill)
  • Tanyard Hill (mudslide)

Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible. Motorists are reminded if they approach standing or flowing water in roadways to stop, turnaround, and find an alternative route. If you must be on the road, leave plenty of time to arrive at your destination.
