For over a decade, this event has been held to honor the name and celebrate the life of slain Manassas City Police Sergeant John D. Conner III, who was killed in the line of duty on July 24, 1988.

Sgt. Conner was a husband and father of four children. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, he was shot and killed after responding to a report that a man in possession of an AR-15 rifle was firing shots on his porch. Upon Sgt. Conner’s arrival, the suspect went into his house and exited through the back, only to surprise the officer with a fatal gunshot to his head.

The devastating event spun new Virginia legislation, which allows for siblings of slain law enforcement officers to attend a Virginia college for free.

Funds raised during this event go toward the Manassas City Police Association, John D. Conner III Scholarship of Honor, which benefits the children of our Police Department personnel attending college as well as one local college bound student in the City of Manassas.

In 2011, the Association granted eight college-aged students with Scholarships of Honor thanks to the runners, sponsors and contributors.  This year, the Association’s goal is to raise at least $20,000.

The race route consists of all paved roads and is a flat and fast course.  Don’t miss your chance to join hundreds who participate in this exciting event.  Register today by completing an entry form at the Manassas City Police Department or online at www.runwashington.com.  For questions about the race, visit www.runwashington.com or call the Capital Running Company’s race hotline at (301) 871-0400.

The Manassas City Police Association Scholarship Program has awarded over $85,000 in annual scholarships since its inception in 2002.  The only financial support that the Association receives for this program is from individual and corporate donors.  All donations supporting the Scholarship Program are tax-deductible and can be made to the Manassas City Police Charitable Foundation and mailed to the Manassas City Police Department, 9518 Fairview Ave, Manassas, VA 20110.
