Surgical Masks at Prom Getting National Attention

Students supporting a friend with cancer highlighted on ABC's Good Morning Live.

Pictures of local prom attendees wearing surgical masks are getting national attention as their story reached the broadcast of ABC's GMA Live, a post-show webcast for Good Morning America.

Students at Osbourn Park High School's prom wore the masks in support of Jared Hill, 18, who battled testicular cancer for most of his senior year, according to ABC News.

Hill, a Hylton Park High senior was escorting his girlfriend on her prom night at Osbourn Park, but he couldn't attend without a surgical mask because of his weakened immune system.

Hill's girlfriend, Emily Jarrell, 18, told ABC that the couple had worn the masks for the Hylton prom earlier in the season.

"I was talking to my friend Deanna one day about it during class, saying that he and I wore the masks to his prom and she said, 'Wow that's so cool, we should get our whole group to wear them,'" Jarrell told ABC.

The story was also featured locally on InsideNova and FoxDC.
