On the Way In and Out

We are looking at the end of the peach harvest over the next few weeks. They came in early this year, so they will leave early, too. But the apples are coming in fast. Honey Crisps, Galas, and Fujis may all be available, and Tyson’s is still bringing those great West Virginia tomatoes. Max will be picking his new heirloom tomatoes soon -- he gave me the first Cherokee Purple last week.

Mike Burner continues to bring gorgeous heirloom tomatoes and potatoes galore -- we had them again tonight in a delicious frittata. Jose is beginning to pick winter squash to sell alongside the summer corn and peppers -- don’t you love the long growing season we have in this area?

Special Events This Week

This is the last weekend to vote for your Favorite Farmers’ Market in America. If you haven’t yet, visit this Web page and type “Smart Markets Bristow” where it says to cast your vote. Vote often or, more specifically, vote once on each electronic device in your home. That is allowed in this election.

Look out for the Cow Train this week. Kids ride free around the parking lot with Cows-N-Corn’s Cow Train brought from the farm just for our littlest market shoppers. We will also be celebrating Cows and Corn throughout the market -- check out the sweet corn ice cream and the new potato salad at Blue Dog. There may be some other corn-based goodies around the market too -- keep your eyes open.
