The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Joy Yi, a violinist in the orchestras who was slain in 2010. Progeny Systems Corporation, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mays, and Col. Carl and Beverly Rehberg, along with others helped to fund the Joy Yi Scholarship. A benefit concert held by the orchestras also partially funds the scholarship. YOPW was founded in 1981 by the Woodbridge Music Club and has grown to include three string orchestras, two symphony orchestras, a wind symphony, and various chamber ensembles.
