Thomas Branigan, 53

Thomas Francis Branigan, of Manassas, VA, was born on January18, 1961 and, after a long illness, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2014 at age 53 while surrounded by loved ones. 

Tom's death was the result of kidney failure. He was the recipient of a donor kidney in 2010. 

Tom is survived by his parents Alan and Susan (Windham) Branigan; Iris, his wife of 20 years; two sons Alexander and Alan; three brothers, Patrick, residing in Thailand, Christopher ( Patricia) of Manassas and Gregory ( Anissa) of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Theresa of Virginia Beach, Michelle of Seattle, WA and Jennifer ( Edward Schmidt) of Falls Church; numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by a brother Robert G. Branigan in 1998.


Tom was born in Arlington, VA and was a graduate of Bishop O'Connell High School (class of 1979). He attended Northern Virginia Community College and James Madison University. He lived 7 years in Taiwan where he tutored students in English. There, Tom met his lovely wife Iris and started a family. A Taiwanese outbreak of a serious contagious respiratory ailment that was preferentially affecting young children caused Tom to return with his two sons to the United States in1998. He was followed by his wife Iris a month later.

Tom and his family have been Manassas residents for 16 years. Tom enjoyed time spent with his sons; fostered their love of music; and, coached them in soccer. Tom and his family are members of All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas and his sons matriculated at the church’s school. Tom was an Information Technology specialist; worked for various local IT firms; and, made a hobby of writing about his work in the IT field.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of Tom’s life, is scheduled for noon on June 28th at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Rd. Manassas, with Father Bob Cilinski officiating.

After the service Tom will be interred at the Branigan-family plot at the Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made in Tom’s name to: Organ Transplant Fund #302, Inovq Health System Foundation, Attn: Debbie Campbell, 3300 Gallows Rd, Falls Church, VA 22042.
