Back To School 101

Patient First offers tips on back-to-school

It is hard to believe, but summer vacation is quickly coming to an end, and before you know it, the kids will be heading back to school. With the start of the school year fast approaching, the tips below may help to make the transition from the pool to the classroom a little easier on everyone.

Establish a routine

During the summer months, it is common for children to go to bed a little later and sleep in during mornings. This can, however, make for a difficult time getting young ones up and out the door on the first day of school. To make things a little easier, establish set bedtimes and wake-up times for the two or three weeks before school starts. This will help get kids into a daily routine, and help their bodies get used to waking earlier in the day.

Update medical records and vaccines

Depending on the school system or grade your child is entering, there may certain vaccinations or boosters that are required for admittance. The end of summer is a great time to gather any pertinent vaccine information and medical records that you child’s school may need. Starting early also ensures that you have plenty of time for your child to receive any vaccines that they may need to update before beginning the school year.

School and Sports Physicals

It’s a good idea to take your child or a physical and eye exam before school starts for the year. If your child plays sports, a physician may have to fill out a release form allowing your child to participate during the school year. These sports physical release forms can usually be found on the school’s website or at the school’s front office. These physicals can be performed at your child’s pediatrician’s office or at the nearest Patient First Neighborhood Medical Center.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy school year!
