Family Dog Perishes in Fire

A fire broke out Sunday in the basement of a single family house in the 6900 block of Signal Hill Drive. No injuries were reported, but a family dog perished in the blaze, officials say.

A fire broke out Sunday in the basement of a single family house, located in the 6900 block of Signal Hill Drive, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Joe Robertson.

It happend around 1 p.m., when the residents were not home. A passerby noticed the fire and called 911.

Units responed and extinguished the fire, which was located in the basement of the home.

There were no injuries reported, but a family dog perished, according Robertson.

Fire damage is estimated at $100,000 and displaced five people.

Fire marshals determined the cause of the fire to be accidental and was caused by fireplace ashes discarded in a paper bag.

It can take days for ashes to completely cool to a safe temperature.
