Handgun at Elementary School, 9-Year-Old Charged

Boy was arrested after showing disassembled gun to classmates, according to Prince William County Police.

A 9-year-old boy is facing charges after bringing a handgun to Ellis Elementary School, according to Prince William County Police.

The unidentified boy is charged with possession of a firearm on school property. He was released to a family member. 

Police responded to the school at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The boy allegedly brought the gun to school disassembled in a carrying case. He reportedly showed it to other students. One of those students told a teacher, who then contacted school administrators and the gun was confiscated.

Since the gun was disassembled, it could not be fired. Officers responded to the school and secured the handgun.

Travis Pettie Sr., 29, of the 10100 block of Statewsboro Court in Manassas, is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He is accused of not properly securing the handgun, according to Prince William County Police.
