Police: 59 Animals Seized, Others Euthanized in Large Animal Cruelty Case

Authorities seized 59 animals and made two arrests in a large animal cruelty case in the Britow area, according to the Prince William County Police.

Larry Dale Sams, 58, of 12108 Nokesville Road, is charged with 57 counts of animal cruelty. He is being held without bond. Carolyn Mae Sams, 33, of the same address, is charged with one count of animal cruelty.

Animal Control officers were first alerted to possible animal cruelty issues at Cross State's Stable on April 11. A citizen tip reported numerous animals appeared emaciated and in need of medical care, according to a PWCPD release.

On April 14, Animal Control officers investigated the property and found numerous animals in poor condition. 

Some of the animals were in need of medical care, and there appeared to be inadequate food and water available for animals, according to police spokesperson Officer Ericca Figueroa. 

"Officers also observed deceased animals and animal parts that were disposed of improperly," she said. "The stalls were found covered with animal feces and water containers were not properly cleaned." 

As a result of the inspection, Animal Control Officers executed a search warrant and removed 59 animals from the property, including, 28 rabbits, 18 sheep, 6 goats, 4 dogs, 2 horses and a bull calf.  

Some small animals were euthanized due to their poor condition, according to Figueroa. The remaining animals are being cared for by the Animal Control staff.
