Police: Driver Who Struck 5-Year-Old Identified

A Manassas Park driver struck the child in Yorkshire Tuesday afternoon.

A driver who struck a 5-year-old Manassas boy on Tuesday has been identified as a 70-year-old man from Manassas Park, Prince William County Police said Thursday afternoon.

An investigation revealed several factors led to the driver not knowing he'd struck the child. Police didn't pursue charges after speaking with lawyers with the Commonwealth Attorney's office.

"The factors include the vehicle's size, which was over 5000 pounds, the kid's size who was around 50 pounds, the fact that it was dark out and that the child was wearing dark clothing," Prince William County Police spokesman Jonathan Perok said in an email to Patch.

The child was struck just after 6:30 p.m. on 8200 block of Rainwater Circle in Manassas.

Witnesses said the boy had just been taken out of a car by his mother when he noticed another family member across the street and ran into the path of the van, a white, Ford E350 series.

The child has been released from a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
