Police: Fatal Crash Victim Had Gunshot Wound

Trooper also injured when his cruiser was struck while investigating crash scene, according to Virginia State Police.

The victim in a fatal crash in Fauquier County apparently had been shot prior to the accident, according to Virginia State Police. And a state trooper was injured hours later while investigating the crash scene. His cruiser was struck by a passing car and that driver now faces DUI charges.

Monday night, a trooper responded to the crash site in the area of Marsh Road and Independence Avenue. The victim's vehicle, a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse, was reportedly speeding southbound on Marsh Road when it ran off the road and flipped several times.

The driver, Corey M. Chamberlain, 24, of Marshall, was thrown from the car. He died later at Inova Faifax Hospital. The determination that he had what appeared to be a gunshot wound led state police back to the crash site on Tuesday, according to VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller.

"At 5:22 a.m. Tuesday, several state police vehicles were positioned in the right, northbound travel lane of Route 17 with emergency lights activated when a northbound 2006 Chevrolet ran off the right side of the road and struck a state police 2013 Ford Taurus," Geller said in a statement.

The trooper sitting in the cruiser at the time had minor injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet, Joseph R. Jenkins, 55, of Midland, was charged with DUI and failure to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle.
