The veterinarians at Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center examined the horses and concluded that they could have spooked and run into an object or each other, police said.

The 10-year-old thoroughbred cross mare was found dead in a field on the Nokesville farm between 6 and 7 a.m. May 3, while the quarter horse gelding palomino was also found severely injured in the field. The horse had to be euthanized.
