Prince William County police said that a Manassas man was recently charged on multiple counts after he allegedly fired a gun in the air and left the loaded handgun where a child could access it.
Damitri Deron Burks, 25, of the 11000 block of Koman Circle in Manassas, was charged with discharging a firearm in a public place, reckless handling of a firearm, endangering a child with an unsecured loaded firearm, possession of a firearm with drugs, and three counts of possession of a schedule I or II narcotic.
Police responded to the incident on Oct. 6, at 10:10 p.m., when witnesses reported that a man was arguing with an unknown woman in a parking lot near Koman Cir. and Jepson Dr. The man, who was later identified as Burks, allegedly fired a handgun into the air, then went inside a home nearby. Officers detained Burks when he left the building.
A woman and 2-year-old girl were unharmed inside the building, but a loaded handgun was left in plain view inside the residence where the girl could access it, police said. After officers executed a search warrant, they found a number of guns and prescription medications.
Officers then arrested Burks, who was held on a $10,000 secured bond. His court date was set for Nov. 7.
