Police Urge Caution on Local Roadway After Fatal Crash

Motorists are being reminded to obey speed limits set on Logmill Road in Haymarket, while teen drivers and their passengers to receive an education on the issues facing them while behind the wheel.

Prince William County Police are urging caution on a local road after a single-vehicle crash last week  killed two teenagers and injured three more. 

 Motorists are being reminded to obey all traffic laws and suggested speed limits  along Logmill Road in Haymarket after the crash.

According to police, various signs along the road not only post the required speed limit, but also warn drivers of approaching road conditions and suggest appropriate speeds on the hilly and curvy stretches.

According Prince County Police Officer Jonathan Perok, local authorities are also in the process of creating an educational program for Battlefield High School students and  parents regarding the issues facing teen drivers and their passengers. The police chief hopes to expand this program to other schools next year.

Prince William County Police were called  to the area of Logmill Road just west of James Madison Highway in neighboring Haymarket on Wednesday, April 20 just after midnight for the report of a single-vehicle crash. Authorities found a 2005 Dodge Magnum that had veered off the road and hit a tree.

The investigation is still ongoing, but has revealed that the driver was traveling westbound on Logmill Road when his vehicle struck a deer. The collision with the deer caused the driver, identified as an 18-year-old male from Gainesville, to lose control and strike a tree.

A total of five occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. Fifteen-year-old Kendra Kaeleen Tucker of Gainesville was was pronounced dead at the scene. Another teen, identified as 15-year-old Savanna Kidane Mouratidis of Haymarket, succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital Friday.

Three other occupants were flown to an area hospital after the crash. The driver of the vehicle was last said to be in stable condition at a local hospital. A 14-year-old girl of Gainesville was also listed in stable condition and a 17-year-old, also of Gainesville, was treated and released, according to police. 

The investigation has revealed that speed was a factor in the crash and none of the occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the incident, police said.
