Student Charged for What She Did on Facebook

A female student at a local high school is charged with harassment after creating a Facebook page targeting her classmates.

A female student at Stonewall Jackson High School in Prince William County is facing charges after creating a Facebook page that targeted other female students at the high school.

According to a WUSA9 report, a 16-year-old girl at the school has been charged with harassment for making a Facebook page called ‘Stonewall Hoes.’ Police told reporters the page was created to ‘insult her classmates.’

According to the report, the Facebook page contained pictures of nine girls with unflattering comments underneath. Police have taken down the webpage.

The teen reportedly faces fines and as much as a year in jail if convicted. She is charged with harassment by computer, which is a misdemeanor.

Director of Communications Services for Prince William County Public Schools Ken Blackstone said school officials do not comment on disciplinary actions being taken against students in cases such as this, but said the school system takes bullying of any kind very seriously.

 “In general...corrective action may range from an admonition to suspension or expulsion,” Blackstone said. “All student discipline incidents are handled case by case.”

 Blackstone also noted the school system has been very proactive in deterring cyberbullying.

“Bullying in Prince William County schools will not be tolerated at all and we have a very strong commitment to making sure that schools create an environment  in which students are free from bullying and have recourse to report it.”

Prince William County Public Schools have policies in place against bullying in its Code of Behavior. There is also a cyberbullying website that has helpful tips and resources for families and students. Students also have access to bullying complaint forms, a tip line and prevention programs.
