Suspect Charged with Assault on Police K-9

Devon L. Moure Wilkerson, 23, of Manassas, faces numerous charges after fleeing from police and struggling with a K-9 police dog.

Prince William County Police say a Manassas-area man was arrested and charged after he reportedly struggled with a police K-9 unit sent to search for him after fleeing from police.

According to police, a Prince William County police officer attempted to stop a
vehicle in the area of Coverstone and Notre Dame roads in the Bull Run area of Prince William County around 3:30 a.m. on July 22.

But the  driver, identified as Devon L. Moure Wilkerson, 23, of Manassas, failed to stop the vehicle and continued driving, police said. Police said Wilkerson eventually stopped on Hiram Court, where he then attempted to flee police on foot by hiding in a wooded area.

Police said a K-9 was called to the scene to help with the search of Wilkerson. A struggle ensued between the accused and the K-9 upon contact, police said. No injuries were reported to any officers or the K-9. No property damage was reported.

Wilkerson was eventually detained and treated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He's been charged with with assault and battery on a police K-9, driving under the influence, felony eluding, resisting arrest, driving on a suspended or revoked operator’s license, possession of a schedule I or II narcotic [cocaine] and possession of marijuana. His court date and bond information were not made available.
