Witnesses Say Manassas Driver Was Racing Before Deadly Crash

Speed is thought to be a factor in the crash, Fairfax County Police said.

A Manassas man died Thursday of injuries he suffered in a traffic crash on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway in Fairfax County Wednesday night.

Brian Benjamin Blaine, 30, died Thursday morning at Inova Fairfax Hospital, investigators from the Fairfax County Franconia Police District report.

Police responded to the crash just after 11 p.m. where witnesses told them Blaine's 2001 Honda S2000 convertible appeared to be racing a dark, newer model Infiniti as it traveled southbound on the parkway just before Spring Village Drive.

Both vehicles passed each other several times before Blaine lost control as his car exited a curb just before Spring Village Drive, veered to the right and off the roadway before striking an embankment and a tree.

The impact forced the car back on the parkway where it rolled and stopped upright in the southbound lanes, police said.

It doesn't appear the Honda and the Infiniti hit each other during the crash. Blaine was taken to the hospital where he died at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Crash investigators said speed was a factor in the crash, but it is not yet known if alcohol or drugs were also factors.

Investigators are still trying to identify the driver of the Infiniti.
