Woman Narrowly Escapes Robber Armed with Knife

The victim had offered the suspect a ride because it was raining when he pulled a knife out and attempted to rob her.

A woman narrowly escaped an armed robbery suspect outside of the Giant Food grocery store Friday, Manassas City Police said.

It happened Friday, April 8 at 2:40 p.m. That's when a 48-year-old woman was in the parking lot of the grocery store, located at the intersection of Centreville Road and Liberia Ave. She was loading groceries into her car when she was approached by a Hispanic male asking for directions, police said.

The female victim offered to give the man a ride because it was raining. But when  he got into the vehicle and the victim started to pull away, the suspect pulled out a knife demanding money.

He told the victim to pull behind the shopping center, but the victim quickly put the car in park, jumped out and started screaming, police said.

Two witnesses who heard her cry for help chased the suspect behind the shopping center between the IHOP and Super 8 motel near Centreville Road before they lost him. No further suspect information was given.

The Manassas City Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in these cases.  The confidential 24-hour tip line is (703) 330-0330.

Bless this soul for acting in a civil caring way towards our fellow man, but those days are over! You can't trust your own neighbor much else offering aid to a stranger. I fault her not for what she did, and i hope the scum meets an unmentionable ending. Probably an illegal on the run.

I miss the way Manassas used to be.

You people let your guard down all too often. Be ready to react. Always... I never walk into a building or open area without observing everything that's going on. Call it situational awareness. When you pull up to a drive thru window be it food, bank, what have you, always know your surroundings, blind spots, things out of the natural. Someone walking in the rain, yeah that stinks, but you don't know if the person is deranged or anything. It's o.k. to "MYOB" no one's going to judge you for that, and there isn't going to be any "divine" intervention, you'll just end up being a statistic... If the person is upright walking on two legs they are fine... Keep moving along. Unless you want to end up having a bad day, or worse...

In this woman's situation the suspect approached her. What you should do in that situation is keep your distance from the person, and don't make any sudden moves. He was ready to react, but his goal was always to get into the car, never allow the situation to come under the control of the other party. Heh, you could even go as far as to keep aknowledging the person as you get into your car, once in shut the doors and lock them crack the windows and tell them you can't help them but your sorry if you want to be polite, but you don't know this person... Rest stops are another place where robberies can take place. Lock your doors when you leave your car, lock your doors when you are in your car, stoplights can also turn into this bad situation, under no circumstances should you let a stranger into your car, this is the checkmate phase. Now if you could play this incident back, you would probably see this woman walking into the grocery store and you would see the man "loitering".
