There are now four electric car charging stations available in Manassas.

According to a press release issued by the city, the Public Works and Utilities Department recently unveiled the new ChargePoint America Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations at four different locations: City of Manassas Public Works/Utilities Department at 8500 Public Works Dr.; the Manassas Museum at 9101 Prince William St. (see attached photo); City Hall, 9027 Center St.; and the Virginia Railway Express parking garage, located 9102 Prince William St.

The stations reflect the ongoing efforts of the city to be environmentally friendly and cost-effective for residents and customers.

“Electric Vehicle stations are no longer the wave of the future, they’re here…and the City of Manassas is excited to offer the service for these low-emission vehicles,” said Mike Moon, director of public works and utilities for the City of Manassas. “With more and more people commuting long hours and high gas prices, consumers are looking for an alternate, cost-effective means of energy.”

The city joined the EV Charging Station Pilot program because with more drivers using electric vehicles, there will be a greater need to provide charging stations outside homes and electric vehicles have a limited range of use from 40 miles to 100 miles, the release said.

The City of Manassas Public Works and Utilities department also wants to encourage the use of electric vehicles by offering charging stations in public parking spaces. Primary charging function will be available 24 hours a day at stations being installed.

ChargePoint America is providing the stations to City of Manassas at no cost, valued at $5,000. The city pays approximately $5,000 per station for installation costs.

The City of Manassas must approve a two-year master service agreement with ChargePoint America, the release said.

Driver’s cost is $5 per session and paid by the driver at time of vehicle charge via credit card. Parking signage for EV charging stations will initially be reserved for hybrids and low-emission vehicles.
