Manassas Democrats Confirm Candidates

The Manassas and Manassas Park Cities Democratic Committee has announced a candidate for city council for the upcoming general election.

The Manassas Democratic Committee has announced a candidate for city council for the first time in decades.

Manassas and Manassas Park Cities  Democratic Committee (MMPCDC) Chair, EJ Scott, said the party is "very grateful" candidate, Patricia Richie-Folks decided to run.

"Republicans have run things in the city for a long time and others should have a voice and take a stand," Scott said.

Scott said  Richie-Folks decided to run because she's attended council meetings in the past and feels there needs to be another voice on the council for inclusive representation.

There's not been a lot of interest in the Manassas Democratic caucus in the past, but Scott said that is changing.

"We've more than tripled our membership in the last four years," she said. "There's a growing interest in getting a Democratic candidate to run in Manassas."

When people see they can make a difference, they want to be more involved and make sure  everyone's voice and beliefs are heard, and not just from one side,  Scott said.

This was evident at a December town hall meeting at City Hall, which was organized by Delegate Bob Marshall, R-Manassas.

Scott said area representatives that participated in the meeting were surprised when so many people showed up to discuss the issues that are important to them.

Scott said the party feels that some of the decisions made by area leaders are not being scrutinized enough. "We need to ask ourselves if we are being good stewards of our tax monies," she said.

The Manassas Democratic Committee will hold their unassembled caucus on Monday, February 6 at 7 p.m. at City Hall in the Council Chambers. Those who wish to attend can sign up the day of on location or contact EJ Scott at 703.368.4541  or chair@manassascitydemocrats.com.
