New Manassas Battlefield Park Superintendent on the Job

Manassas park's new top ranger, Jon 'JJ' James, has 38 years experience as a manager and historian.

As Jon G. James, “JJ” arrives on the job this week, he will bring not only an impressive knowledge of American history, but also a passion to preserve and share events that have shaped our nation. 

His professional experience in the National Park Service (NPS) spans more than 38 years as a park superintendent, interpretive ranger, historian, operations chief and resource manager. Throughout his career, James has maintained collaborative relationships with American Indians and has worked extensively to maintain government-to-government relationships with tribes.

“JJ has honed the full complement of skills we look for in NPS leaders. His experience, including working with communities and partner groups, fiscal management and park planning will serve the park, neighbors and the Civil War community very well,” National Capital Regional Director Stephen E. Whitesell said. 

James comes to Manassas National Battlefield Park from his position as deputy superintendent at George Washington Memorial Parkway. He has served as superintendent at Big Hole National Battlefield, as chief of interpretation at Fort Larned National Historic Site, and as a park historian at Jefferson National Expansion Memorial – the Gateway Arch. He began his NPS career as a park aide at Golden Spike National Historic Site.

“As one of the best preserved battlefields of the Civil War, Manassas represents a truly pivotal moment in American history,” James said. “I'm enthusiastic about joining the excellent staff and volunteers at this memorable place and look forward to working with the local community and partners who have an interest in this exceptional national treasure.” 

James holds a bachelor’s degree in American history from the College of William and Mary. He replaces Ed Clark who is now the superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park (Pa.).
